Two years after a mass shooting, Ben and Abigail meet in a group for survivors of the victims. Ben doesn’t know that Abigail is a secret interloper; her son was the shooter who killed, among many others, Ben’s wife. Ben and Abigail are immediately drawn to each other and begin an affair, with Ben unaware of who Abigail really is, and Abigail too afraid to tell him. But when the truth is exposed on social media, their lives, and all those around them, face another devastating reckoning.

Pilot – The Assignation
After meeting in a church basement support group for survivors of victims killed in a mass shooting, Abigail and Ben get drinks and follow their mutual attraction into a motel room and a romantic relationship. Ben doesn't know that Abigail is the mother of the shooter who killed his wife.Ben tells his doting sister Jamie about having a new person in his life, and maintains his ties to his emotionally stunted brother-in-law, Sam. Abigail reveals to her ex-husband Ted that she is involved in a relationship, and with whom. Ted is furious over her indiscretion and tells her to break it off. Ben becomes embroiled in a feud with Brian Shaw, a right-wing radio shock jock with a penchant for rousing his millions of followers, and targets Ben.
